Le football joué par ses experts est le spectacle sportif contemporain : rien n’attire plus de spectateurs, rien ne mobilise autant de supporters, rien ne déclenche autant de passions voire de déraisons dans cette immense cour de récréation que forment les sports. Nous sommes nombreux à pouvoir expliquer un tel engouement en parlant d’un apprentissage facile des régies du jeu, d’une dimension festive, d’une médiatisation croissante. En appartenant aux quotidiens d’un grand nombre de citoyens, le football s’est installé dans notre société jusqu’à représenter une certaine forme de tradition. Mais cet attribut n’est pas satisfaisant car il participe au tarissement des tentatives d’explication de l’audience du football et contribue, insidieusement, à rendre illégitime le question­nement. La sociologie de cette réussite ne manque pourtant pas de terrains en friche : pourquoi les mobilisations partisanes sont-elles différentes d’un pays à l’autre, d’une ville à l’autre, d’un stade à l’autre ? Pourquoi observe-t-on autant de manières de vivre la passion du football ? Comment devient-on un supporter ? Comment s’organise ce militantisme des temps modernes ? Ce livre existe à cause de ces questions mais ces questions n’existent pas seulement pour éliminer les lieux communs : le lecteur verra par lui-même si les résultats sportifs expliquent tout, si l’accès facile à l’intelligence du jeu explique tout, si la médiatisation outrancière explique tout. En progressant pas à pas dans l’univers du supporterisme, le lecteur finira au cœur des engagements les plus militants c’est-à-dire au côté des plus spectaculaires. Il découvrira alors que l’audience rime avec les déviances, qu’une passion débouche parfois sur un désordre public manifeste, que la cour de récréation peut se transformer en un terrain de jeux apparemment très sérieux. Comment expliquer qu’une activité du temps libre accueille du comportement provocateur, belliqueux et plus rarement fondamentalement violent ? Et…

In dit boek probeert Pascal Gielen zicht te krijgen op de verschillende spelers die het cultuurbeleid op dit moment beïnvloeden en bepalen: de officiële en de officieuze beleidsmakers. Zo bekijkt hij bijvoorbeeld de rol van sponsors, de media, vooraanstaande culturele figuren. Tegelijkertijd gaat hij na hoe openbaar de beïnvloeding is. In dit boek komt op die manier een boeiende topografie tot stand van het 'culturele Vlaanderen'. Vervolgens wijst de auteur op een aantal knelpunten in het huidige beleid. Ons bestuur vertoont nog steeds de littekens van het 19de-eeuwse bureaucratische model, maar ook van de verzuiling en de politisering. Met het oog op de definitieve kentering van die situatie worden twee toekomstscenario's voor ons cultuurbeleid voorgesteld. Een eerste bouwt daarbij verder op de Vlaamse en Belgische beleidstraditie, een tweede laat zich inspireren door het Nederlandse model. "TECHNOCRATS OF THE IMAGINATION traces the rise of collaborative art and technology labs in the U.S. from WWII to the present. Ryan Bishop and John Beck reveal the intertwined histories of the avant-garde art movement and the military-industrial complex, showing how radical pedagogical practices traveled from Germany's Bauhaus movement to the U.S. art world and interacted with government-funded military research and development in university laboratories. During the 1960s both media labs and studio labs leaned heavily on methods of interdisciplinary collaboration and the power of American modernity to model new modes of social organization. The book's chapters take up MIT's Center for Art, Science, and Technology, Bell Labs's E.A.T. (Experiments in Art and Technology) Salon, and Los Angeles Museum of Art's Art + Technology Program. Their interconnected history illuminates how much of contemporary media culture and aesthetics depends on the historical relationship between military, corporate, and university actors. In light of revived interest in Black Mountain College and other 1960s art and technology labs, this book draws important connections between the contemporary art world and the militarized lab model of research that has dominated the sciences since the 1950s. The authors situate the rise of collaborative art and technology projects in the 1960s within John Dewey's ideology of scientific democracy, showing how leading thinkers from the Bauhaus movement in Germany immigrated to the U.S. and brought with them a Deweyan model for collaborative and interdisciplinary art and technology research. Over the course of the decade, the U.S. government increased funding to scientific research at university and private laboratories. Beck and Bishop investigate how various art and technology projects incorporated the collaborative and innovative interdisciplinarity of the avant-garde art movement with the corporate funding structure driven by the U.S. government's military and technoscientific interests. Finally, the authors consider the legacy of 1960s art and technology projects. During the 1970s and 80s, defense R&D funding was less motivated by a Cold War corporate state, and was instead restructured according to an entrepreneurial and neoliberal model. At the same time, funding in the art world also became increasingly financialized and globalized. Today's art and technology work happens collaboratively not because of an intellectual commitment to interdisciplinarity, but because of the precarity of the contemporary labor market. This book will interest students and scholars in art history and theory, media studies, history of technology, American studies, cultural studies, and critical university studies"--
